I went and saw the movie Alien: Romulus the other night with a friend and by gosh golly was that movie good!
Alien: Romulus follows Rain, her synthetic human Andy, and her friends are trying to find a way off a mining colony planet. They get the opportunity when they discover a abandoned ship in orbit where they can take the cryonic stasis chambers and make it to a better planet. But this ship has no remaining crew for a reason…
There are some predictable elements in the film, but the execution of them was done well. The horror aspect is back! Good to see Alien go to real horror again. Granted I haven’t seen all the films in the franchise, but I do like them.
The set design and the tech shown in the film draws you into its world. The acting is good. The actor who plays Andy is top notch! That dude is probably the best actor in the film. The actor playing Rain is not far behind though.
Going into this you do expect many of these characters to be cannon fodder, but the film does attempt to flesh them out a bit and I think they do a good job. The horror is solid. This film does have a few jump scares, but they are earned. A jump scare is good if its for the real horror of the film, and Alien: Romulus does it right.
It seems much of the debate online is round the final third of the film. My take on it is, its good. I think it does what it wanted to do, and it does it well. This film has an objective, and it meets the goal. Alien: Romulus is a great horror popcorn flick well worth the time to watch.
