Candyman Movie Review

I watched Candyman the other night, and I must say it was an enjoyable film. Not exactly what I expected, but still a good film. I didn’t know much about it going in, but I was surprised to find out it was inspired by one of Clive Barker’s works. Clive Barker, if you do not know, was the author of, The Hellbound Heart, which was the book based off the film, Hellraiser.

The movie follows Helen Lyle (Virginia Madsen) as she researches the modern folktale of Candyman (Tony Todd), a ghost that kills people if they say their his name five times in a mirror. But is Candyman a real ghost out to get people? And if so, does he have something else in store for Helen?

I’ve seen this film be classified as different horror subgenres and I do think a mix of gothic and slasher are appropriate for it. The film has the pacing and tone of a gothic, but with slasher elements. It has a unqiue blend which elevates the film and has a uniuqe charm to this style of horror.

The acting was well done, especailly by Virginia Madsen and Tony Todd. They both did their characters justice. The other actors played their parts well. The soundtrack was not overbearing but added to the tone of the film. The cinematography was well crafted and you can tell they took attention to detail with it. The editing and directing were both well done.

If you haven’t seen this film, I’d recommend giving it a shot. It is a little slower paced than you’d think it would be, so go into the film with that expectation and you won’t be disappointed. I can for sure see myself watching this again. Candyman overall, is a fun watch.
